Present at the luncheon were some of the most respected and recognized individuals around the Globe for evangelism. In attendance, were Evangelist Junior Hill, Dr Bailey Smith, Dr Rick Gage, Dr Frank Page, Dr Roy Fish and countless others who have not only run the race but en route to finishing strong. The highlight of the luncheon for me was when Evangelist Junior Hill introduced a man in Christian circles who needed no introduction. Our keynote speaker was Dr Cliff Barrows whom served as Minister of Music for 65 years with Evangelist Billy Graham. It was noted that Dr Billy Graham has spoken to more people in person than anyone in history. That being true, it would make sense that Dr Cliff Barrows has sung more in person than anyone in the history of humanity.
Cliff Barrows humbly reached the podium and shared a powerful message to a packed audience the importance of not only starting strong but Finish Strong. He reminded us to Preach the Word, Exude Humility and Integrity, Offer an Invitation following the sermon and worship the Lord in Spirit and Truth. As a boy, I had the privilege to see him minister in person about ten times at various Billy Graham crusades and watch him now almost every Saturday night on TBN as they re-air Billy Graham Classics but to finally meet him was a true treat. What was most impressive was not the fact that he is in his mid 80’s or that he could still hold a note or even the humbling realization that he is now legally blind. His wife literally reads the Bible to him daily and he relies on memorization for study, devotion and preparation for future sermons.
What touched me most was not the fact that he Started strong, Stayed strong but his Swan Song was sacred and strong! My friend, Bob Smith is a well respected soloist in music circles and at the conclusion of the program he led the music and was singing Chris Tomlin’s “How Great is our God.” However, at the very end he placed the microphone in the fragile yet faithful hands of Cliff Barrows and one more time the giant of the Gospel conducted us in the powerful chorus of “HOW GREAT THOU ART.” To see this senior saint come alive like he did countless times at crusades on every continent with Evangelist Billy Graham was priceless. Cliff Barrows was in his element and not a dry eye was in the room. He may have not been able to see us with his deteriorated vision but God sure saw him and all of us did too.
Rarely, in life does one have the opportunity to see someone who was the best at what they did and yet, at the very end still giving their all and finishing their race with faith and fervor. What a testimony! All of us have dropped the proverbial ball or baton but today is a new day and may we experience God’s grace, fresh forgiveness and move forward by faith and run the race set before us (Hebrews 12:1-3). One of my friends, Michael English loves to take the old and new and combine them and as he likes to say: “Put a ‘lil ENGLISH to it.” The classic clip from one of my all-time favorite bands – NEWSBOYS is ironically, one of my favorite songs. May the life of my Lord and the Christ-like example of Cliff Barrows and song below remind us all to not only Start Strong but “STAY STRONG.”
Thanks Frankā¦ God bless your obedience. Thanks for the email hug. Have a great week. Lord bless you…Have a Jesus filled day!
Pastor Ken
Look at you with Cliff Barrows!!!
Wow! wish i coulda been a lil fly and watched, and listened. Frank, u look great, my head would be spinning from that trip to GA.
I’ve met Junior Hill, not Cliff, or the others…”How Great Thow Art,” what a song! Thx for sharing.
Way 2 go, Frank! :=)
Frank, your revival services over a year ago at College Parkway Baptist Church in Maryland will always remain in my heart. I bought your book and CD of favorite illustrations and listened to it over and over.
You are truly an inspiration to us all. One feels your faithfulness in serving the living Lord. You touch so many for Jesus and leave a praiseworthy echo of your presence that is strengthening to our walk with God.
Frank, I believe that the Lord has really stamped you with His love, His calling for His service to reach out to others and bring the Gospel of Jesus in a way that permeates the hearts of your listeners. Your energy and manner of presentation of your services are powerful expressions of your dedication and calling to reach your listeners, to awaken their need to walk a closer walk with God and be a witness of His love to others. You have such a way with words and instant connection with people. I loved how in your services you were bragging on others in the audience, your kind words made us all feel connected and important. Billy Graham also always included folks in his remarks.
God has given you a unique personality that I feel reaches all ages, especially the youth and elderly like me. I pray our church has you back again soon. Not to be judgemental but I believe churches are hungry for inspirational, motivational and anointed preachers like you! Too often we encounter a dry, energy-less speaker that is in the pulpit for a few minutes and gone. I believe in the personal handshake and greeting and you reminded me of Jesus and sincere politicians who truly can work a room.
I love that old song “Give Me That Old Fashioned Religion and I would never get tired of hearing you preach. My prayer for you is that God will enlarge your ministry and take you like has the likeness of the great ones as Billy Graham. I’d love to know when you will be in the area again. I sure would make the effort to be part of one of your services.
Thank you Frank and I thank God for you, your family and ministry. Be blessed
My friends great grandmother always said, “Don’t start out like you can’t hold out”… I think the concept applies to everything, relationships, work, the Walk…. People have a tendancy to not keep up the effort the were originally willing to invest, in anything. It’s a good reminder. Finish Strong.
I knew the GBC dedication would be a wonderful event – sorry I wasn’t able to attend but happy to see your pics of the day!
Frank, your impression of Billy Graham is dead on! When you hit his southern voice at church services most think he is back in the building. I love when you say: “I’d like to send you some free LITERATURE.” AWESOME!!
Love your new blog! I am so proud of everything God is doing in your life and of your willingness to walk in obedience to Him. Living the Abundant Life is all about surrender and I certainly believe you are there.
As one who has been a grateful recipient of your encouragement and support, I can attest to the sincerity of your message. You are blazing a trail of grace that leads straight to the throne of God, lighting the way for many others. May God richly bless you and the work you do for Him!
Abiding in His Astonishing, Transformational, and Always Amazing Grace,
Debbie
I rejoice at all the Lord is doing in your ministry, my brother and friend!!! Looking forward to hanging out with you on January 29 at GWCEA!!!!
I have put the May revival at Mt. Ranier Baptist Church on my calendar. Let me know how many nights you need me to sing. Have a great day, and do tell baby Andrew I said “Happy Birthday!!!!” I can’t believe he is already about to turn 1!!!!
Frank Shelton I must say I like your style. I would like to know more people
like you with such a hunger for the word, keep up the good works brother and God
be with you and may he provide you travel mercies and blessed be the words that
flow from your mouth
Brother, thank you! How your letter blessed my heart – You are indeed a “refresher.”
Frank, the Lord is using you in a wonderful way – and I believe He will use you even more in the days ahead. I am impressed with your humble, teachable, and submissive spirit. That is rare among young evangelists and I delight to see it. After his kingdom was rejected, Samuel said to Saul, “when thou wast little in thine own eyes…” The problem with Saul was that he forgot where he used to be and was overcome with his own importance. That is a trait that befalls many men of God – and frankly, it is the kiss of death – just like it was for Saul. Frank, I don’t see that in you and I hope you will maintain that unassuming spirit.
I will be praying for you that the Lord will open many doors for you. And in the meantime, Dr. Super Incredible, Amazing, Fantastic Frank, my friend, my buddy, and a man I want to be like when I grow up, don’t you ever forget this one single thing: JUNIOR HILL SURE DOES LOVE YOU!
Frank, I just wanted to touch base with you again to thank you for speaking to our chapel on Tuesday at Grace Brethren Christian School in Clinton, MD. The 4th-6th graders really enjoyed you. They were hanging on your every word. Man, you spoke 5 times in less than four hours. The high school students went ‘NUTS” with your two talks at their chapel.
I appreciate your enthusiasm for Jesus and for His kingdom work. I pray that he will continue to bless you and your ministry! I will have to look you up on faceboook.
Wow, you’re getting closer to your earthly desire of meeting Dr. Billy Graham!
