This past week was wild! In just over a week, I was blessed to speak at two funerals, tape two TV shows, speak in two states and preached 11 times. The movie: “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” comes to mind and the one thing I’m never at a shortage of in my line of work is PEOPLE. Not talking the magazine but mankind. Just last weekend, I was with my college buddy, Billy Griffin walking in gorgeous Fort Myers, Florida while in town preaching in the Sunshine State and two people stopped me on the street to tell me that we’re friends on FACEBOOK and they’ve been blessed by the ministry. PRAISE THE LORD!
Recently, while back at home in Maryland my wife, Ruth and kids dined out at one of our favorite places in Southern Maryland on a Friday night. I won’t name the place because everyone is entitled to a bad outing periodically. Typically, the service is first class and the food – First Rate! Thirty minutes AFTER being seated the waitress finally came over and took our drink orders. Half an hour later we finally got our drinks. An hour into our dinner, Baby Andrew began to cry, Ruth began to sigh and I thought I was going to die. An hour and a half later (after being seated) most of our food came out but Ruth’s was not ready. The SNICKERS commercial danced in my head: “Not going anywhere for awhile?” It has been said: “If Momma ain’t happy……..” you get the point.
The kids were getting restless and I have the patience of Job but was tempted to get weary. What was supposed to be a “perfect evening” with the family dining at one of our favorite places to eat was turning into anything but the ideal dinner date. Ruth took Andrew outside to calm him down because he was “running on empty.” My daughter, Hannah said: “Daddy, why don’t you complain to the waitress when she comes back out.” The fact is the service was super slow that night, the food was late and now my wife didn’t even feel like eating.
I had two options: “Make a scene” or take the high road. With the clock ticking, late in the game (dinner) and running on fumes emotionally our waitress came back and I thought WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? She knew the evening was not the best and her eyes were hesitant to look at me as she brought the bill. Some customers may have been tempted to demand not to pay for some of the food or get a FREE apetizer but tapping into God’s grace I said to the young woman: “I realize tonight was not a usual evening for either one of us and it was just one of those rare evenings where everything that could go wrong did. However, it is not your fault. I could tell you guys were slammed tonight the moment we walked in and I admire you working hard and pray the rest of your evening is much better for you as you continue to serve your customers.” From there, I proceeded to give her my debit card to pay for the bill and she walked away. My daughter said: “Dad, why didn’t you let her have it. The truth is the service stinked tonight!”
Literally, less than two minutes later the waitress comes back with my bill to sign and had this HUGE smile on her face. She said: “First of all, thanks for not yelling at me tonight. Second, I thought that was you when you came in but wasn’t sure and when I saw your name on your card I knew it was you! She then screams “You’re FRANK SHELTON!! Now she has my and everyone else’s attention in a six booth radius. She said: “You spoke at my church over ten years ago and signed my Bible and I wanted to thank you for the IMPACT you have had on my life! I still read from that Bible on a daily basis!!” She walked away, my daughter’s eyes were bigger than the plate on our table and my heart skipped not once but twice.
By God’s grace, we encountered a POP QUIZ that evening and didn’t even know it. Thanks to tapping into the Holy Spirit “by faith” and not acting in the flesh we PASSED THAT TEST. Can you imagine how I would have felt if on that one instance (when the Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak) would have belittled that little lady? My testimony would have suffered and worse may have hindered her walk with the Lord. In this journey with Jesus we don’t have to be famous but FAITHFUL.
The next time you are hit with a “pop quiz” may you too dig deep and press into God to give Him Glory in both your victories and valleys. We just never know when someone is watching but rest assured, The One whom matters most is watching (God) and may we be found faithful. In school we got grades but in life we need GRACE. Everyone has a bad day (even preachers) but may we be a blessing to others because we represent Jesus all the time (not just part of the time). Our testimony is more important than our titles but “to whom much is given much is required.” The word TESTimony has “test” in it and a pop quiz is a mini-test to gauge how we are doing at the time. Plus, pop quizes can come at a moment’s notice. When I was in grade school the teacher issued them when I least expected it or least prepared. However, our Teacher has not left us ill-prepared. We have a helper in the Holy Spirit. We need to stay PRAYED UP in order to promote out the love of Jesus in our daily lives. May we acquire to have more of a heart knowledge to go with our head knowledge and graduate from Sunday saints to every day evangelizers. Some preach, others teach but all of us are called to REACH the hurting with the Hope of Heaven.
Thanks Frank! You are so awesome!! We appreciate your BOLDNESS! Your message
rocked last weekend at First Baptist Church of Labelle, FL and was what I needed to hear! Thanks as always, blessings to you and your family
Frank, it was an awesome service both morning and evening! Thanks brother it was a blessing!!
I was awed with your message Frank at last week’s Christian Chamber you spoke in SW Florida. Brother, you roared the Word of God and our duty to serve…a career is a job – a calling brings joy! Kneel before God and stand among men and you will succeed!
I told my friends to visit http://www.FrankShelton.com go get some “Frank” you are God’s messenger. We were blessed by your visit.
Brother Frank, we are so excited to you speaking at our YOUTH RALLY in Philadelphia, PA on November 6-8, 2010! We are pumped to see what God will do in our midst. We are praying for you and your airline tickets are in the mail. Love you and praying for you and this great conference. God bless you
No one likes pop quizes but thankful that with God’s help we can pass those surprise tests. Thanks for sharing your heart and wisdom. Has anyone told you that you have a way with words? HA HA
My hat’s off to you, a great story and it shows how you have a great handle on
life. To take the adversity along with the good. Just as I pointed out that the
little story about the quarter wasn’t about you, but made me think of you as you
are truly a leader among men.

My husband has had the phrase “grace is on the table” on his mind and in our home in a big way for at least a week. Grace was on your table that night and you dined in royal style. God is amazing. What an awesome story!
Frank, I have been in a similar situation with the restaurant saga. Glad you and I passed the test, it won’t be our last I’m sure. Our cruise ticket is paid in full, see you then if not before.
Rest with Him.
Reggie
Yep, loving the latest blog post, “POP QUIZ”! Having been on both ends of that restaurant scene, I can say I endeavor to stay studied-up and ready for the “Pop Quizzes” that God puts in my life.
Frankie, your words at Dewey Richardson’s funeral at First Baptist Church of Waldorf, MD this weekend were absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you so much
Brother, I wept when I read this. Then enemy was ripping that poor server to shreds with circumstance after circumstance beyond her control, knowing you had ministered to her before that night and seeking to destroy in her a good work GOD had begun!!
Glory to GOD, the devil didn’t win & GOD encouraged that young server, through you.
I am grateful to GOD to know you as friend & Brother. ♥

Thank You for being a guest at my home in Labell,, Florida enjoyed you visit. My family was very touched by your message at churc. You are truely a man of God and it was a pleasure to serve you. This story is very touching, I am glad you tapped into the holy spirit. This is why we need to pray and read our Bible daily. God will lead us. Wd just have to be quiet sometimes and listen. Dust on our bibles don’t pay, but God rains down on us when we pray , pray Every time I’m in a restaurant now I will think of this message. Thankyou. Your friend in Christ. Debra Tolar
What an awesome story Frank, you are truely blessed.
Frankie J, Nice story about your dinner date with Ruth and kids. You are special – don’t think many people would have been as understanding as you were about the service. The Holy Spirit was with you.
Father, as we live your word, may your power flow in greater measure, to help those on our paths. Allow nothing that was meant for harm in our lives to prosper. Guide Frank’s every step. Continue to flow your rivers of living waters out of him to irrigate those who are dry and thirsty for you. In the NAME of JESUS… Amen

Frank, I am Bill Holt and Cindy Thornley’s mother and I have met you several times at the church office(Grace Brethren), so I don’t expect you to remember me, with the thousands of people you meet. Anyway, I think you are the sweetest, nicest person and you are a wonderful speaker. My husband and I had retired to our farm in WV for 26 years before we returned to MD. We were members of G’brier Reg. Baptist in Ronceverte and dearly love Pastor Tim and family. He came here to speak at French’s funeral, and people loved him at GBC!
Recently I saw you as a FB friend to one of my friends from GRB, so I asked her how she knew Frankie (as Bill calls you). She said that you had spoken to their youth group there! Well!! You really get around and it is a small world! I just had to tell you all this! ha
May god continue to bless you, Frankie, and keep you safe in your travels!!
Sincerely,
Isabel Holt
Glad you had a nice trip in FL. Where do you usually preach? Do you have your own church…if so, I’d like to check it out someday…please let me know…I “like your style”…blessings!

Frank! Thank YOU for officiating at the funeral two weeks ago. Many, many people told us how impressed they were by what you said and the fact that the funeral wasn’t a depressing, somber event like the funerals they’re used to attending. Emma remarked numerous times that it was, “…so real, so natural…not scripted or formal…it was something normal people can relate to, not a bunch of Latin or ceremony that no one understands.”
My Mom left me a voice message stating that the funeral service was, “so uplifting and edifying.” And it truly was! It really was a celebration of Bill’s life here as well as the one he’s beginning in Heaven with the Lord.
You done good, Frank! Hope y’all can make it to the car-show/cook-out on the 24th!
Jenna
WOW! Frank that is an awesome story and example of how we should be. What a testament to your ministry and your walk but more importantly a Testament to the Grace and Mercy given by the Father.
Thats cool Frank. Hannah’s seeing God work through you…..
Frank, You’re too sweet! I hope you know though that you’re a very special young man who is in a unique position to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ and you’re doing a fantastic job! Keep up the good work! It’s a pleasure to follow your travels and your adventures for Christ
